• Position Title: SPARKS Peer Educator

  • Pay Rate: Tier II – starts at $14.00/hour

Department Mission

The Department of Health Promotion supports the Elon community by cultivating the holistic well-being of students through educational programs and initiatives.

Summary of Position

Health Promotion provides quality educational experiences designed to positively impact the development of Elon students and contribute to the wellness of the campus community. SPARKS peer educators plan, implement, and evaluate health and wellness programs for students and members of the wider community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to all team members and ensure all employee policies are followed
  • Cultivate a welcoming, inclusive, and non-judgmental space for individuals and groups to connect and develop authentic relationships with peers
  • Facilitate ongoing/reoccurring wellness workshops and presentations, including occasional day and/or weekend retreats
  • Attend weekly business meetings
  • Participate in weekly focus group meetings (i.e. mental health/physical health, substance education, sexual health)
  • Hold a minimum of one weekly office hour in the SPARKS Peer Education Office—105I Moseley and Mind-Body Connection Suite (146A)
  • Collaborate with individuals, groups, campus and community organizations to develop programs that empower students to make informed, value-based decisions
  • Practice and demonstrate proficiency in facilitating one additional SPARKS workshop each semester
  • Plan and implement wellness programs and events on a variety of college health topics
  • Contribute to planning and facilitating SPARKS programs and workshops
  • Complete a one-on-one meeting with SPARKS staff advisor
  • Complete the common reading before the start of the fall semester
  • Complete necessary administrative tasks (specific to team)
  • Foster strong partnerships with other team leaders, members of their team, as well as colleagues throughout Health Promotion
  • Deliver quality customer service to all patrons, program participants, and visitors
  • Attend and actively participate in all team leader meetings and trainings
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a currently employed Health Promotion employee
  • Certified Peer Educator (CPE) Training (available through Health Promotion)
  • Mental Health First Aid Training (preferred – available through Health Promotion)
  • Ability to manage tasks in a changing environment with flexibility and confidence
  • Demonstrated positive attitude, sensitivity, and sound judgement to facilitate and teach effectively with a diversity of staff, participants, groups, and others
  • Enthusiasm for the group development and for facilitating experiences for others
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to become van certified through Elon

  • Develop transferrable skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, organization, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and decision-making.
  • Be able to articulate the value of recreation and wellness in the overall college student experience.
  • Develop a personal leadership philosophy based on the Social Change Model principles of leading one’s self, leading others, and leading for change.
