Mental health and substance use are closely connected. Some individuals experiencing mental health challenges may use alcohol or other substances as a way to cope with symptoms. Research shows there is an association between mental health challenges and substance use, though it does not show that alcohol or other substance use directly determines one’s mental health. Substance use, however, can sometimes trigger symptoms or make existing challenges worse, especially with frequent or heavy use.

If you are using alcohol or other substances to cope with depression, anxiety, or other mental health challenges, support is available. You can connect with a licensed counselor at the R.N. Ellington Health and Counseling Center by calling (336) 278-7280 to make an appointment.
