Coursework & Prerequisites

What sort of academic background do I need?

The program is designed for students from any academic background.

Will I be required to take any prerequisite courses?

No prerequisite courses are required to be accepted into the program. Two foundation courses, accounting and finance, will need to be completed prior to taking the core accounting or finance courses.

Students who have prior coursework in accounting or finance are eligible to take placement exams, which, if passed, will enable the student to exempt this requirement

GMAT/GRE

If I take the GMAT/GRE test more than once, does the school average the scores or use the higher score?

If you take the GMAT multiple times, we will take the highest score.  If you take the GRE multiple times, we will combine the highest scores from each section of your tests.

Is one test preferred over the other?

No, we encourage applicants to take the exam with which they are most comfortable.

Are there any exemptions or substitutions for the GMAT/GRE?

Some applicants are eligible for a waiver of the testing requirement. Visit the test waiver page for more information.

I think I meet the waiver criteria. Am I automatically approved?

Applicants can apply for waiver consideration. Please note that meeting the criteria does not mean a waiver will automatically be granted. The Admissions committee considers all waiver applications and decisions are communicated within two weeks of receiving all application materials.

Campus Visits

When are campus visits scheduled?

Applicants can schedule an individual visit to campus by contacting the Office of Graduate Admissions at (336) 278-7600 or gradadm@elon.edu. Individual visits are scheduled Monday through Friday.

Campus Events are scheduled several times a year to allow applicants to meet faculty, staff, and students. These events are scheduled in the evening to accommodate professional and personal responsibilities.

International Applicants

Do I have to take the TOEFL or IELTS?

International applicants who did not complete their undergraduate work in the United States are generally required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or DuoLingo. Those who have completed one year or more of full-time study as a degree-seeking student in a US four-year institution, or whose language of undergraduate instruction in their home country was English, are not required to submit English language proficiency scores.

You can view the current status of required materials by returning to the status page. When you log on, you will be able to view the materials our office has received. It is your responsibility to request GMAT/GRE scores, transcripts, and recommendation letters. We will make an effort to contact you if your application is incomplete.

How quickly is an admission decision made?

All decisions are made on a rolling basis. Once all application materials are received, a decision is typically rendered within two weeks.

How will I receive an admission decision?

All applicants will receive a letter in the mail notifying them of the admission committee’s decision.
