Tuesday, September 19th - College Coffee for Bi Awareness Week - Stop by the GLC's table at College Coffee to learn more about Bi-Identities between 9:40 and 10:30am.

Saturday, September 23rd - National Day of Bi Visibility - National Day of Bi Visibility spreads awareness and promotes bi identities annually.

Tuesday, September 26th - College Coffee for Supporting Survivors Week - Stop by our table at College Coffee to learn more about Supporting Survivors Week and EFFECT - Elon's Feminist Group.

Wednesday, September 27th - Women's Forum: How to Make the Most of Male Mentoring with Dr. Brad Johnson - Join us in Lindner 206 from 4-5pm to talk with Dr. Brad Johnson, author of numerous articles and books on mentoring, ethics and counseling.

Monay, October 23rd - 27th - Asexual Awareness Week - Join the GLC as we host various events during this week to celebrate and inform people about asexual identities. 

Thursday, October 26th - Intersex Awareness Day - Join the GLC as we host various events during this day to celebrate and inform people about intersex identities.

Tuesday, October 31st - Moseley Halloween - Time TBD. Join the GLC and other student organizations in upstairs Moseley for a special Halloween Trick-or-Treat!

November - 2017

Saturday, November 4th - LGBTQIA Homecoming Brunch and Awards - Location TBD. Join students and alumni for a Homecoming Brunch.

Tuesday, November 14th - 20th - Trans Awareness Week - Join the GLC as we host various events during this week to celebrate trans identities.

Monday, November 20th - Trans Day of Rememberance - Join the GLC in observing Trans Day of Rememberance, a day to reflect and remember those who lost their lives due to anti-trans violence around the world. 

December - 2017

Monday, February 6th - Global Solidarity March - Come support refugees and international students at 12:30pm at Speakers Corner.

Monday, February 6th - Spectrum - Elon's Queer-Straight Student Alliance will be meeting at 6:00 in the Gender & LGBTQIA Center.  Weekly Topic:  Brainstorming Activism & Letter-Writing to Senators and Legislators

Monday, February 13th - Spectrum - Elon's Queer-Straight Student Alliance will be meeting at 6:00 in the Gender & LGBTQIA Center.

Monday, February 13th - International Condom Day - Come to Phi Beta Kappa Plaza from 11:00-1:00 and celebrate National Condom Day! There will be testing as well as male and female condoms available. Multiple student organizations and community organizations will be on hand to share their gender and sexuality events and resources. Safer sex materials will be provided and there will be free HIV/STI testing done by Alamance Cares.

Tuesday, February 14th - College Coffee: National Condom Day - Come celebrate National Condom Day at College Coffee from 9:45am - 10:30am. Safer sex materials will be provided, as well as some t-shirts left over from National Condom Day.

Tuesday, February 14th - Vagina Monologues Performances - Come join us in Whitley for the Vagina Monologues at 6:30pm and 9pm. Tickets are $5, and benefits Crossroads Sexual Assault. (Tickets will be sold at the door). Email mbranch2@elon.edu if you'd like to help advertise or sell tickets!

Wednesday, February 15th - Seeing Gender: Equity, Progress and Challenges in 2017 A faculty panel discussing the importance of feminism in the context of this coming year and current events. This will be at 5:30pm in Lakeside Meeting Rooms.

Tuesday, April 4th - Michael Messner "More Men: From Violence to Anti-Violence" 7pm Whitley Aud - Michael Messner is professor of sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California. His teaching and research focuses on gender and sports, men and masculinities, and gender-based violence.  He is the author of several books, including It’s all for the kids:  Gender, families and youth sports (California, 2009), King of the wild suburb:  A memoir of fathers, sons and guns (Plain View Press, 2011), and most recently, Some men:  Feminist allies and the movement to end violence against women (Oxford University Press, 2015). His honors include the Pursuit of Justice Award from the California Women’s Law Center, the Feminist Mentoring Award from the Sociologists for Women in Society, and the Jessie Bernard Award, presented by the American Sociological Association in recognition of contributions to the understanding of women’s lives. His talk will answer the question: What does it mean for men to join with women as allies in preventing sexual assault and domestic violence? Thursday, April 6th - Drag Make-Up Tutorial - Join Spectrum in the Gender & LGBTQIA Center to learn how to do drag make-up from 5:30PM - 8:30PM.

Friday, April 7th - Dragstravaganza! - Join us for a night of Drag and fun as a part of Spring Pride Week put on by Spectrum.

Thursday, April 13th - Take Back the Night - Join SPARKS and Alpha Chi Omega in Whitley Auditorium at 7PM to raise awareness for survivors of domestic violence.

Friday, April 21st - Day of Silence will take place at 4pm.

Monday, April 24th - Spectrum - Elon's Queer-Straight Alliance group will be meeting at 6pm in the Gender & LGBTQIA Center.

May 2017

Monday, May 1 Lavender Graduation & Awards Ceremony 2017 - Join us from 5:00-6:30 in Lakeside 2nd Floor as we honor graduating LGBTQIA & Ally students and provide awards to deserving student and employee leaders across the Elon LGBTQIA community family.  President Lambert will address the graduating seniors, and there will be tons of cheering, reminiscing, awards, plus a free dinner!  RSVP Required to mbosch3@elon.edu 

 

Winter Term - January 2017

Thursday, January 5th - Willy Wilkinson "Viewing Trans Experience Through a Mixed Heritage Lens" -  6:00 pm - LaRose Theater - Willy Wilkinson, MPH, is an award-winning, mixed heritage, Asian American, transgender writer, public health consultant, cultural competency trainer, and spoken word performer. Reading excerpts from his writing, Wilkinson will use these passages as a jumping-off point for an engaging discussion about culturally compentent approaches to social interactions, community membership, classification systems and services.

Thursday, January 5th - Willy Wilkinson "Creating a Trans Affirming Campus" -  10:00 am & 3:00 pm - Moseley 215 - This workshop will explore the range of transgender identities and experience, and identify how to create a respectful campus environment. We will discuss health, educational, and legal issues that impact trans people, and identify best practices for systemically supporting trans students and colleagues.

Wednesday, January 18th - Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture: Michael Kimmel, "Mars and Venus, Or Planet Earth: Women and Men in a New Millennium" - A tireless advocate of gender equality, author Michael Kimmel is one of the world's leading experts on men and masculinity. A distinguished professor of sociology and gender studies at Stonybrook University (NY), Kimmel founded the center for the Study of Men and Masculinity at the university in 2013.
 

 

December 2016

Thursday, December 1 - World AIDS Day Event - In honor of World AIDS Day, we'll have Alamance Cares doing HIV/STD Testing 10AM-2PM in McKinnon F, and then from 5PM-8PM, we'll have free food & speakers galore as we uncover and explore the realities of people living with, and impacted by, HIV & AIDS.  This is collaboration with Red Ribbon Society, Alamance Pride, Gender & LGBTQIA Center, AIDS Health Foundation, Alamance Cares, and many more!!!!

Finals are in December, we'll see you back in January 2017!

Tuesday, November 8 - Election Day - Please go vote in local, statewide, and national elections!!!!!  You can access voting information via www.elon.edu/vote

Wednesday, November 9 - "Deep Run" documentary screening: Join the Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies program for a screening of "Deep Run", a documentary about trans life in rural North Carolina. The film will be screened in Belk Pavillion 208 from 5-7pm.

Monday, Novemeber 14 - Sunday, November 20 - Trans Awareness Week - The GLC will be celebrating Trans Awareness Week, a week dedicated to celebrating and recognizing those of trans identities.

Sunday, November 20 - Trans Day of Remembrace - A day dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives due to transphobia and to bringing awareness to the continuing pattern of violence against trans people.

Saturday, October 1 - Alamance Pride Festival - 11:00-5:00 - Downtown Burlington at the Old Depot & Amphitheatre - All are invited to join us for Alamance County's 2nd Annual LGBTQIA Pride Festival ! ! !  Meet tons of people from across Mebane, Graham, Elon, Burlington, Gibsonville, Haw River, and more!  Tons of vendors selling beautiful jewelry, novelties, and clothing.  Starts with an Interfaith Service at 11:00, followed by musical performances all day, including 2 drag shows and local breakdancing teens!!!

Monday, October 10 - Therese Huston - 5:00 Lakeside 2nd Floor - "What You Should Know About Gender & Decision-Making" (with 6:30 Dinner To Follow for any interested students)

Tuesday, October 11 - National Coming Out Week College Coffee - 9:40 on Phi Beta Kappa Plaza - Join us for some rockin' tunes and rainbow-sprinkled donuts as we showcase our pride.  Take photos with a Coming Out Day filter and our identity flags, to be uploaded on our GLC Facebook Page!

Tuesday, August 9 - PFLAG Alamance Monthly Mtg - 7:00 - Elon Community Church - Our local PFLAG chapter meets monthly on campus to support friends and family who are looking for resources and conversations around assisting their LGBTQIA loved ones.

August 12, 13, 14 - LGBTQIA Alumni Network Leadership Retreat - 3 days - Our LGBTQIA Alumni Network now has the largest leadership team yet!  They will be meeting for a retreat in Washington, D.C. to discuss locating and re-connecting LGBTQIA alumni back to Elon, publicizing major campus resources, and addressing needs of members who might not have been aware-or-out regarding their identities while enrolled at Elon.

Tuesday, August 16 - LGBTQIA Ally Training for 20+ Head Staff - 1:30 - Head Staff will learn about inclusive language related to LGBTQIA identities and scenarios working with Orientation Leaders and new incoming students around pronouns, identities, and resources on campus.

Friday, August 19 - 3 LGBTQIA Ally Trainings for 100+ Resident Assistants (RAs) - 9:15 - RAs will learn about inclusive language related to LGBTQIA identities and scenarios working with students in the residence halls around coming out, major resources, and showing care, compassion, concern, and empathy towards LGBTQIA residents.

Saturday, August 20 - Elon Tabling at Charlotte Pride - 12:00-5:00 - Whether you're a prospective or current student, employee, or alumni, come see the Gender & LGBTQIA Center as well as Admissions at the big ELON table for Charlotte Pride.  We can be found in the CampusPRIDE College Fair Zone, recruiting LGBTQIA new students to Elon and sipping on cold Starbucks lemonade.

Monday, August 22 - LGBTQIA Ally Training for 120+ Orientation Leaders - 1:30 - Head Staff will learn about inclusive language related to LGBTQIA identities and scenarios working with new incoming students around pronouns, identities, and resources on campus.

Tuesday, August 23 - Pronoun Training Session for 100+ Elon 101 Instructors - 10:15 - As Elon 101 instructors will now have access to the newly added gender pronoun fields for incoming student records, this session will help them with the importance of recognizing pronouns, avoiding use of the word "preferred," practicing using they/them as a singular pronoun, as well as what to do if they make a mis-step.

Thursday, August 25 - LGBTQIA Ally Training for 100+ Second-Year Law School Students - 9:00 - As part of the Elon Law Leadership Series for students entering law practica, internships, and the profession at large, this session connects the entire 2L (2nd Year Law) class of Elon Law School with scenarios around inclusive language, working with LGBTQIA clients, and creating an LGBTQIA-inclusive law firm and practice.

Sunday, August 28 - Living The Maroon Life for 1500+ Incoming First-Year Students - 9:00 - Every incoming student goes through this diversity session filled with student skits around diversity, identity, privilege, intersectionality, and everyone' s place in creating an inclusive community at Elon University.  This session is created & hosted by the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education as well as the Gender & LGBTQIA Center.
