September 2018

Tuesday, September 6th – LGBTQIA & Ally New Student Welcome –  Come to Lakeside 212 from 5pm-6pm to join new and returning students, faculty and staff to learn more about LGBTQIA @ Elon!  Student groups will be present and there will be door prizes and food!

Monday, September 10th – Family Dinner with the GLC – Come join the GLC from 6pm-7pm in Clohan Hall for casual conversations and community with other LGBTQIA students and allies. Make sure to RSVP here to reserve a spot!

Monday, September 17th – Friday, September 23rd – Bisexual Awareness Week – Check our Facebook page and Phoenix Connect for more information on events hosted during this week.

Tuesday, September 18th – College Coffee for Bi Awareness Week- Stop by the GLC’s table at College Coffee to learn more about Bi-Identities between 9:40 and 10:20am.

Thursday, September 20th – Sex in the Dark – This event attempts to teach new and old students about guilt-free sex education. The event prides itself of LGBTQ+ inclusiveness and sexual health. Students will participate in a lights-off Q+A event that is focused on promoting fun, “guiltless” sex education. Join the GLC and Effect at 5pm in the LaRose Digital Theater.

Friday, September 21st – Dragstravaganza – Elon’s Drag show & Dance Party with Professional and Student Performers. Join us for a night of Drag and fun from 10pm-1am at the Tap House.

Monday, September 24th – Friday, September 28th – Supporting Survivors Week –  Join the Gender & LGBTQIA Center and various campus partners as we host events during Supporting Survivors Week – a week to bring awareness of and support to survivors of sexual violence, relationship violence and stalking.

Tuesday, September 25th – College Coffee for Supporting Survivors Week-   Stop by the GLC’s table at College Coffee to learn more about supporting survivors between 9:40 and 10:20am.

Thursday, September 27th – Take Back the Night- Take Back the Night is a student speak-out that is meant to empower and support survivors of gender-based violence. The speak-out will take place in Whitley Auditorium at 6:30pm. The speak-out will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and resources at 7:30pm in Steers Pavilion.

Saturday, September 29th – Durham Pride – Join the GLC and LGBTQ students from Elon as we march in the Durham Pride festival. Be on the lookout for more information including transportation to the event!

Monday, October 1st – Wednesday, October 31st – National Coming Out Month, LGBTQ History Month, and Domestic/Relationship Violence Awareness Month 

Monday, October 1st- Tiq Milan, “A Man by My Own Design: Reimagining Masculinity from a Trans Experience” – Join us in Yeager Recital Hall at 6pm to hear from writer, speaker and activist Tiq Milan as he talks about his experience as a Black trans man navigating masculinity with intentionality. In a society where gender roles often lead to toxic masculinity, Milan discusses being a “man of his own design” where he re-constructs masculinity from a feminist perspective. This event is sponsored by the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture Endowment, The Fund for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, Women’s, Gender & Sexualities Studies, the Gender & LGBTQIA Center, and the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education.

Tuesday, October 2nd – Kim and Tiq Milan, “Radical Black Love: A Political Act” – Join Tiq and Kim Katrin Milan at 7pm in Whitley Auditorium for an exciting, thought-provoking talk about blackness, queerness and love in the face of adversity – both how it can heal and be a radical act of resistance. Tiq and Kim will speak to their experiences as a transgender man and a queer woman, and discuss love as a means of liberation. This event is sponsored by the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture Endowment, The Fund for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, Women’s, Gender & Sexualities Studies, the Gender & LGBTQIA Center, and the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education.

Thursday, October 4th – LGBTQIA Ally Training for Faculty and Staff – The GLC will be hosting an educational session exploring LGBTQIA histories, terminology, ally tips, and interactive small group scenarios on real-life current events and topics around gender and sexuality in Moseley 215 from 12:15pm-2:15pm

Saturday, October 6th – 4th Annual Alamance Pride Festival – Join the Gender & LGBTQIA Center and the Alamance County community as we celebrate Pride on Saturday, October 6th! For more information, visit Alamance Pride’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AlamancePride/

Saturday, November 3rd – Homecoming Brunch for LGBTQIA Alumni & Students – Join current students, alumni, and the GLC for a Homecoming Brunch from 10am-2pm in Upstairs Lakeside.

Saturday, November 11th – Intersect: Diversity and Leadership Conference – During this conference, participants will engage in dialogue, reflection, and training through keynote speakers, workshops, and lunch and learns. The conference pillars work to inspire participants to create positive change for the common good in their organizations and community.

Monday, November 12th- Friday, November 16th – Transgender Awareness Week – Join the GLC as we host various events during this week to celebrate trans identities.
