Change Maker Scholars is a selective merit-based scholarship program for academically strong students interested in civic engagement and creating solutions to real-world issues.

Program Highlights

  • Work to develop awareness and understanding of community connections and appreciation for diverse communities and cultures
  • Seek opportunities to create and promote civic practices that lead to constructive community participation
  • Pursue leadership opportunities on campus and in the community
  • Develop a constellation of mentors involving Elon faculty, staff, and peers

Year One

  • Live in East Neighborhood, a residential hub for civic engagement and social innovation
  • Take English 1100 as a cohort with the Assistant Dean/Director of the Kernodle Center for Civic Life
  • Meet approximately twice monthly for dinners and enrichment opportunities
  • Participate in a mentoring group experience with second-year Change Makers
  • Complete 20 hours of service with local community partners

Year Two

  • Meet approximately twice monthly for dinners and enrichment opportunities
  • Serve as a mentor for first-year Change Makers
  • Pursue formal and informal leadership opportunities and civic engagement activities on campus and in the local community
  • Develop and share reflections of involvement and impact on an initiative or organization
  • Seek faculty, staff, and peer mentors to begin building your constellation of mentors

Junior and Senior Years

  • Pursue formal and informal leadership opportunities and civic engagement activities on campus and in the local community
  • Pursue a domestic internship, Study USA, or study abroad experience

Ready to Apply?

Students with substantial and broad leadership experiences in their high school and/or communities are competitive candidates for Elon’s Scholars programs. Fifteen Change Makers are selected in each first-year class.

The Scholars application will be available Feb. 1 to students who haven’t applied to any other scholarship program OR applied and were not invited to interview. Applicants may apply to up to two Scholars programs. The application deadline is March 1. Decisions will be released March 22.

If students applied to another scholarship program, interviewed but were not awarded, the Scholars application will be available no later than April 1. Application deadline will be April 10 and decisions will be released April 18.

Students can apply to the Change Maker Scholars programs following submissions of their first-year application.
