Civic Engagement Pathways Hub

In building a “college for the world,” Elon’s founders envisioned the power of education to lift communities. Elon aims to be the architect of an innovative model for how universities develop reciprocal partnerships and collaborative solutions to advance healthy, prosperous, and socially just communities in Alamance and Guilford Counties and around the world. Preparing students to be global citizens and informed leaders motivated by concern for the common good is a cornerstone of the Elon University mission statement.

The scaffolded curricular and co-curricular experiences listed on this site are intentionally designed to advance this mission and help prepare every student to participate in community and civic engagement opportunities, allowing them to gain a broader understanding of their civic responsibilities and become active citizens. The following levels provide an increasing degree of depth for student development in civic learning:

Civic Learning Spiral

The Civic Learning Spiral (Musil 2009) serves as a framework designed to help educate students to be informed, responsible, and civically engaged members of society. These braids are intended to advance student development in the area of civic learning:

  • Self
  • Communities and Culture
  • Knowledge
  • Skills
  • Values
  • Public Action

Video Modules

Created by a group of talented Elon students in the Department of Human Service Studies, these video modules are a great resource to illustrate the community-based learning experience from start to finish. Course instructors can integrate these modules into their courses to teach about community-based learning and provide students with practical tips to prepare them for working with community partners.
