    Professor Amanda Tapler, Chair of the Department of Health and Human Performance and Senior Lecturer provides leadership for departmental initiatives and serves on major university committees.  Professor Tapler contributes to the Public Health Studies Program as a faculty member and as a mentor for student’s undergraduate research endeavors.  Professor Tapler works closely with the Comprehensive Rural Health Project in Jamkhed, India to offer unique health education and public health learning experiences.

    Professor Lynda Butler-Storsved, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, has nine years of experience as a public school teacher and coach. She serves as coordinator of the Physical Education and Health major as well as the minor in coaching. She is active also as Elon Academy’s Coordinator of the Athletic Evening Curriculum. Professor Storsved teaches pedagogy, fitness, health and a variety of coaching classes. Professor Butler-Storsved earned her M.A. in Physical Education with a Specialization in Coach from Ball State University.     Bryan E. Hedrick was born and raised in London Kentucky.  Bryan attended Sue Bennett College and Eastern Kentucky University where he earned 30 hours beyond the Masters Degree in Education.  Bryan began his professional teaching career in public schools in Kentucky, then moved to Canandaigua, New York where he continued to teach in the public schools.  After residing in New York for three years Bryan moved to Jacksonville, Florida and made the transition into Higher Education.  Bryan was first hired as a Drug Prevention Specialist for the University of North Florida, to work with the school systems in nineteen Northeast Florida counties.  He later became an instructor for the College of Health, teaching a wide range of Health Science and Public Health courses on a full time basis.

    Bryan came to Elon University in the Fall of 2004 to serve as an Instructor in the Department of Health and Human Performance.  His primary responsibilty was to assist in the delivery of the HED 111, Contemporary Wellness Issues courses to undergraduate students.  Bryan has also taught several other courses while at Elon including; GST 110 Global Experience, GST 324, Substance Abuse and Human Behavior, PEH 125, Skills and Activities for Teaching Lifetime Sports, PEH 126, Skills and Activities for Teaching Team Sports and PED 177, Badminton.

    Bryan has beeen very active in University governance, serving on numerous committees.  Bryan has served on General Studies Council, University Academic Standing Committee, The University Appeals Board, Department and School of Education Curriculum and Stewardship Committees and various task forces.  He served on the University Faculty Athletics Committee and Chaired the committee as the University transitioned into the CAA.

    Bryan is also involved in residential life having served as an Faculty Affiliate for the Danieley Center for two years, and served five years as a Faculty Advisor for the Health and Wellness Living Learning Community.  Additionally, Bryan has advised serveral student clubs including assisting in the formation of a Fishing Club and has been the Golf Club Advisor for five years.

    Dr. Carol A Smith is in her 18th year at Elon University. During that time she has held leadership roles in many areas of the university; most currently as the Program Coordinator for the Adventure Based Learning Minor; as well as the mentor for the class of 2017 Periclean Scholars and Leadership Fellows.

    Her degrees are in Physical Education/Teacher Education, Health Education, Special Education and Kinesiology with a concentration in Adventure Based Learning.  She teaches physical education (activity and pedogogy), health education, dance, study abroad, upper level core and adventure based learning.

    Professor Resa Walch, Chair of the HHP Department, Senior Lecturer and Faculty Fellow for Substance Education, has more than 25 years experience in higher education. She has taught at Elon for fifteen years.  She provides leadership for departmental initiatives and actively serves on major university committees. Professor Walch teaches Wellness, Health of the Human Spirit, Substance Abuse and Human Behavior and Perspectives in Women’s Health. She mentors students in research related to health issues and college students. Her personal research interests include best practices for spirituality in personal health courses, alcohol and other drug issues on college campuses and health behaviors of first-year students.  Professor Walch presents at state, regional and national peer reviewed conferences. She has received CATL and School of Education research grants related to interdisciplinary teaching and course development.

Professor Emerita

Dr. Janie P. Brown

Dr. Brown, a Physical Education professor, retired in 2005 after 38 years at Elon and 44 years of teaching. She is currently serving as the Immediate Past President Elect of the Board of Director of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.


Dr. Michael Calhoun

Dr. Calhoun retired in 2015 after 30 years of service to the Department of Health and Human Performance and Elon University. He has made noteworthy contributions to teaching, service and to his academic discipline.
