Monday, April 15, 5:30-7pm: Jess Dugan: Transcendence (2005-2012). Come to this thrilling reception for and talk by artist Dugan, whose photographic portraits of transgender and gender variant people call into question societal expectations about gender roles and how these expectations affect everyone. The exhibition as well as the talk and reception will be in the Isabella Cannon Room in the Center for the Arts. Missed the talk? Come see the exhibition anyway, which runs through May 27th.
Thursday, May 2, 4:10-5:15pm: Cartoons of Establishing Justice and Q and A with artist and writer Darrell Coble. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is displaying a triptych of graphic representations titled Cartoons of Establishing Justice by local photographer and writer, Darrell Coble as well as hosting the author. Mr Coble will be addressing the major themes in his art work as well as answering questions. The three photographic prints represent his journey as a gay man growing up amidst the social and cultural systems of the rural South This special event supports the purpose of anthropology and sociology which “ is to make the world a safe place for diversity.” Ruth Benedict (1887-1948). May 8, 6-7:30pm, Whitley Auditorium: Hudson Taylor, "Allyship: Becoming A Champion for Inclusion on Your Campus". Taylor, Wrestling Coach at Columbia University and life-long athlete ally, will be speaking on how all campus members, but particularly those involved in athletics, can make campuses safer and more inclusive for LGBTQI and other people. Sunday, May 19, 4-6pm: Lavender Graduation! This is a celebration of Elon seniors (undergrad and grad) who are graduating this May. Snacks, rainbow tassels (and more?), and a few short (really!) speeches.
