Elon started participating in STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) in 2011 and earned a Silver rating. STARS is a voluntary reporting framework for higher education institutions to track and measure sustainability performance.

Elon earned its 8th STARS Silver rating in March 2026. The rating is based on information reported across five areas: academics, engagement, operations, planning & administration, and innovation & leadership. An institution’s STARS score is based on the percentage of points earned in the four main categories plus up to ten points for innovative strategies and practices reported in the innovation & leadership category.
