Course Overload
Course Overload
Course Load Maximum for any one semester is as follows:
Fall and Spring Semesters – 18 semester hours
Winter Term – 4 semester hours
Summer I – 8 semester hours
Summer II – 8 semester hours
Approval to enroll in a course overload is an academic decision that permits students to register for additional semester hours beyond the maximum for the semester if they have at least a 3.000 GPA and approval from their academic advisor. To request an overload, a student must first meet with their academic advisor. If the advisor agrees that a student may enroll for more than the maximum load, the student submits the Course Overload Approval Form. The total number of credits, including the overload, cannot exceed 20 credits. Once the approval is sent to the Registrar’s Office, the Registrar will advise the student on how to add overload hours to their schedule.
Please keep in mind that additional tuition is charged for overloads. You can access information about per-credit costs in the Tuition and Fees section of the Academic Catalog. There are a few types of courses for which overload tuition is not charged including:
- Global Preparatory Course for Winter Term Study Abroad: GBL 1XXX preparatory course
- ROTC Military Studies courses: MSC classes
- HEU course taken in Winter Term
- Private music lessons
For additional guidance, students with questions about the maximum semester load may consult with the Assistant Provost for Academic Excellence and Integrity and students with questions about overload tuition may consult their Dean’s Office.
