Declaring Your Major

Deciding your academic path is a critical step in your time at College. Students will officially declare any majors and minors they choose to complete by the semester they plan to graduate.

Declaring a major connects students with a faculty advisor in their academic department, allows students to view all graduation requirements of their academic interests in MyProgress in OnTrack, and allows them to create a graduation plan in their program to ensure that they can complete all of graduation requirements.

This process is different for first-year students compared to transfer students:

First-Year Students

Incoming first-year students will be enrolled inĀ ELN 1010: The First-Year Advising Seminar. This is a 1 semester hour course with the instructor also serving as the initial academic advisor for students in their course. Students are able to declare their major at the end of their first semester. In the fall semester, this is typically after Thanksgiving Break. In the spring semester, this is traditionally around Spring Break.

Transfer Students

Incoming transfer students are eligible to declare their major immediately. If they choose to enroll in ELN 1010, they will need to wait until the conclusion of that class. Otherwise, they can be declared immediately and will be connected with a faculty advisor shortly after their first semester at Elon begins.

How Do I Declare?

Once you are ready to declare, go to the Office of the Registrar’s website for Major Declaration. Additional information on the process and frequently asked questions is available on their website.
