Computing Sciences Teams Excel at Mid-Atlantic Regional Programming Contest
On Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, Elon had four three-person programming teams excel at the IBM sponsored Mid-Atlantic ACM Regional Programming Contest. All four teams finished in the top 50% with two of the teams finishing in the top 25% of the 157 teams, representing over 40 universities.
Elon computing sciences student writes code for new iPhone app
Elon University senior Tyler Anderson wrote major portions of the code for a new iPhone/iPod Touch application released by the Iconfactory, a graphic design and software firm based in Greensboro, N.C. The application was approved by Apple for distribution on its iTunes App Store on Oct. 13, following a rigorous quality review for compliance on Apple's mobile devices.

Three Elon CIS and CS seniors complete summer undergraduate research experiences
During the past summer, the Computing Sciences department was proud to have three CIS and CS seniors complete ten week summer undergraduate research experiences at three different universities. Amanda Bienz did her research at Clemson University. She worked on a Virtual Patient project to allow students majoring in nursing to train by asking questions of a computer program instead of a professor. Amy Eubanks did her research at Elon University. She worked on an augmented reality application for mobile smart phones to persuade people to spend more time outdoors. Katherine Vogt did her research at Virginia Tech. She investigated the collaborative use of large display environments for sense-making and visual analytics.
Five Elon CIS and CS seniors complete 10 week summer internship at Credit Suisse
During the past summer, Credit Suisse offered approximately thirty paid summer internship positions for rising senior undergraduates at their Research Triangle Park location. These are highly regarded internships with many applicants from across North Carolina. The Elon Computing Sciences department was proud to have five students receive and complete the summer internship. The five students were: Joel Blondy, Dan Cresse, Catherine FitzGerald, John Minshall and Andrew Sutherland.

90% of Elon CS 2010 Grads accept IT jobs or graduate school
The Computing Sciences Department had ten majors graduate in 2010. The graduates were in high demand and at graduation seven had accepted full time IT employment and two had accepted graduate school. The seven students that went into the IT workplace accepted jobs at IBM, Credit Suisse and UNC Greensboro. The two students who went to graduate school for an advanced CS degree went to Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

Tree planting honors computing sciences alum killed in 2008
Family and friends of Matthew J. Ford ’04 gathered in Loy Center on Wednesday afternoon to plant a tree in memory of the computing sciences major, who died a year ago to the day in a Burlington, N.C., industrial accident.

Faculty and students kick off SURF 2009
Work by Elon University students and professors took center stage Tuesday morning in the opening hours of SURF 2009. More than 30 faculty members presented research in the second annual "Celebration of Faculty Scholarship," which segued into a special College Coffee in the Koury Business Center for dozens of students to share their research findings in a poster session that packed the building's concourse.

Joel Hollingsworth presented a paper co-authored with Dave Powell on July 16, 2009, at the 2009 World Conference in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Applied Computing in Las Vegas. Computing Sciences Programming Teams Excel at Regional Programming Contest
Elon University had two programming teams mentored by Professor Joel Hollingsworth compete on Saturday, October 27, at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Programming Contest. The contest was simultaneously held at 8 universities with Elon competing at the Duke University site. A total of 137 teams from over 50 colleges and universities competed.

Lynn R. Heinrichs, associate professor of computer information systems and business administration, has been invited to present at the 2007 Delta Pi Epsilon national conference in New Orleans. Dr. Heinrichs will present research conducted with Betty Kleen from Nicholls State University on small business disaster recovery planning.

On July 11, Dave Powell presented a paper co-authored with Joel Hollingsworth at the 2007 International Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference in London. The title of the paper was "A NSGA-II, Web Enabled, Parallel Optimization Framework for NLP and MINLP." This is an an international conference with over 650 attendees.
Computer Science Team Wins Triad Programming Contest
The spring Triad programming contest was held on Saturday, April 14, at NC A&T State University. Thirteen teams from five area universities competed. The Elon team of Clarke Rainey, Nathan Shemonski and Dustin White mentored by Joel Hollingsworth finished first.
