All forcible Sexual Acts are considered Sexual Violence. Sexual Violence occurs when a person is exposed to sexual acts without their consent. Sexual assault is not about sex, it is a way for the offender to gain a sense of power and control. Most offenders use manipulation and coercion in which physical force, a verbal threat, intimidation and/or blaming the victim is used to force sexual acts. ANYONE can become a victim of sexual assault regardless of gender, race, age, or economic status. There are many forms of sexual assault, the most common occurs when a person known to the victim-a friend, co-worker, or family member-forces unwanted sexual acts. Adolescents and college students are most at risk for completed and attempted rape.
Elon University will not tolerate acts of sexual
abuse, assault, discrimination or harassment.
Rape, acquaintance rape and other forms of sexual harassment
are violations of an individual's rights. It is
everyone's responsibility in the university community to
become sensitive to and educated about the legal, social and
university codes regarding behavior in these areas. Students
who believe they have been the victims of sexual abuse or
assault have the right to report the incident to Leigh-Anne
Royster (Coordinator for Personal Health Programs and
Community Well-Being), the offices of counseling services,
judicial affairs, campus safety and police, and/or the Elon
Police Department (Town of Elon Municipal Building). Students
may wish to call Crossroads (Sexual Assault Response and
Resource Center), and a trained volunteer will quickly
respond to the victim. | |
