Short-Term Programs

Study USA offers the opportunity to explore topical issues and ideas during two short-term periods, Winter Term and summer.

Winter Term

Elon offers more than 35 innovative short-term programs during Winter Term, including around a dozen Study USA programs.  In presidential election years, for example, you can travel to Iowa with Study USA and volunteer in a campaign and meet U.S. presidential candidates in our Iowa Caucus course. Spend Winter Term studying ecology and sustainability in south Florida while satisfying your science lab requirement for non-science majors. Or, travel to the Magic Kingdom in Orlando and find out about the sociology and psychology of happiness through a study of Disney World and its business techniques. Or, go check out the latest in independent film with the Study USA Sundance January term class.

Summer

In summer session I, experience “The Great Land” of Alaska and satisfy your Literature requirement with Study USA’s Elon in Alaska. A hybrid course, you take an online literature course for two weeks before meeting up in Anchorage with your classmates. Spend the next two weeks on a wilderness adventure you won’t soon forget as you hike and camp through some of North America’s most stunning vistas.

Columbia College: Comedy Studies at Second City in Chicago

For Program description, costs and courses offered, see the Comedy Studies website.

Students enroll in Columbia College in Chicago as “students at large” and at the conclusion of your studies Columbia will release your transcript to Elon University. Study USA advises that students meet with Prof. Fred Rubeck, Chair of the Department for Performing Arts and Robin Straka in the Registrar’s Office for advising and course approval prior to enrollment with Comedy Studies. You can reach Prof. Rubeck at (336) 278-5695 or at rubeck@elon.edu.

Students enrolling at Columbia College’s Comedy Studies at Second City will pay Elon University directly for all costs associated with the program. See below for an estimated breakdown of costs. Please note that students arrange housing directly through Columbia College.

Duke Marine Lab

REU Research Experience for Undergraduates: Program Estuarine and Coastal Marine Sciences
Elon University students interested in enrolling in regular semester or summer session courses at the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort must register through the Elon University Global Education Center.  This is an Elon approved program; however, the tuition costs of attending Duke University are noticeably higher than those at Elon.  Elon students are charged the same rate as Duke University students.

Students should seek academic advising for this program through Prof. Michael Kingston at kingston@elon.edu or by calling (336) 278-6182.

For complete program information, please see the Duke Marine Lab website.

Independent Experiences

If you plan to arrange your own academic internship abroad or to conduct independent research or an independent study under the supervision of an Elon faculty member, part of your approval process includes GEC approval.

To learn more about internship credit at Elon, please see this helpful resource from the Student Professional Development Center (SPDC).

Non-Elon Programs

The Isabella Cannon Global Education Center (GEC) requires students to attend Elon-vetted study abroad programs unless there is a compelling academic reason to attend a program not reviewed and vetted by Elon. If you choose to explore other, non-Elon programs during the semester, Winter Term, or summer, you must complete a petition.

Emergency Information

In the event of an emergency, visit emergency.elon.edu or E-net News for vital instructions and information.

Calling the Elon Campus Safety & Police is the most effective way to respond to emergencies abroad, outside of the Elon Global Education Center’s regular business hours. Students experiencing a psychological crisis should also contact Campus Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555 and ask to speak to the after-hours counselor on call.
