Adventures in Leadership

Campus Recreation offers incoming students the opportunity to participate in Adventures in Leadership, a first-year summer outdoor experience which aims to ease first-year students’ transition to Elon, facilitate meaningful and authentic interactions between students, faculty, and the natural world that extend beyond the experience, and support self-authorship as students develop their paths and identities within a supportive and inclusive environment.

At the Elon Challenge, participants work together on the new high and low-elements challenge course to reach beyond their perceived boundaries, overcome obstacles, and experience success in a variety of problem-solving initiatives. Alamance Youth Leadership Academy

Alamance Youth Leadership Academy (AYLA)

The goal of Alamance Youth Leadership Academy is to empower youth through the connections of civic engagement and leadership development for a greater Alamance County.

The Center for Leadership is committed to developing local youth in the community. Each summer, Elon University collaborates with the Alamance Chamber and the Alamance-Burlington School System to host a summer institute and offers leadership development opportunities through campus visits in November and April.

Elon University’s AYLA Summer Institute is a four-and-a-half-day leadership program held every June. During the institute, more than 90 rising 7th graders participate in team-building activities and leadership skill workshops. They also create recommendations for their schools in three key areas: community engagement, recognition, and fostering a culture of kindness. Eight Elon students serve as AYLA facilitators, employed through Campus Recreation & Wellness as Adventures in Leadership (AIL) program, guiding the participants throughout the experience.

AYLA currently serves over 200+ 7th and 8th graders from 10 middle schools across Alamance County. Building on the summer institute, the program empowers students to develop and apply their leadership skills in their schools.
