Plugins extend the functionality of WordPress, allowing us to add features beyond what’s available by default. In our multisite environment, plugins are carefully managed to ensure stability, security and compatibility.

How We Manage Plugins

We do not allow users to install or activate their own plugins. All plugins must be reviewed and approved by the web team before they are installed. If you believe a plugin could help meet a specific need, see the Requesting a Plugin section below for next steps.

Why Plugin Requests Are Vetted

Our WordPress environment includes custom themes, plugins and integrations that depend on a specific version of WordPress. Adding plugins without proper review can lead to:

  • Conflicts with our existing codebase
  • Site performance issues
  • Security vulnerabilities
  • Plugin abandonment or lack of support

To avoid these risks, we only install plugins that are:

  • Fully compatible with our version of WordPress
  • Actively maintained by a reputable developer or company
  • Clearly documented and well-supported
  • Necessary to meet a specific goal not already covered by our tools

Requesting a Plugin

If you’d like us to consider a plugin, email web@elon.edu with the following:

  • A brief summary of what it does and how it would help
  • A link to the official plugin page (WordPress.org or developer site)
  • Any alternatives you’ve considered

We’ll review the request and follow up with next steps. In many cases we may suggest an alternate approach using existing tools or features.

Available Plugins

The plugins listed below are custom tools developed and maintained by our web team. They’ve been approved for use across our system and can be added to your site if needed. Each plugin page includes an overview, usage notes and any setup instructions.

  • Resource Manager – Create, organize and display useful materials such as links, files, documents, forms and other content using filterable, searchable lists

If you’re looking for guidance on a specific plugin, start with the relevant page. If a plugin isn’t currently active on your site and you think it would be useful, contact web@elon.edu and we’ll help determine next steps.
