Business Fellows

The knowledge and experience you receive as a Business Fellow will put you on a fast track for career success. An internship with a major company, working with other Business Fellows on a student-run financial services firm that manages part of the Elon endowment, a study abroad experience in your first year at Elon -- all give you firsthand knowledge of the national and global business world. If you plan to major in business administration, economics or accounting, consider the advantages of the Business Fellows program. Here are some of the opportunities available to Business Fellows:

Freshman Seminars
An introduction to the exciting world of modern-day business and economics, including visits to firms in the region. A new feature, the Winter Term study abroad, introduces you to global issues in your first year.

Study Abroad Grant
All Fellows are eligible to receive a $750 grant to use for economics or business-related study abroad courses approved by Elon University.

Support for Internships
In their junior year, Business Fellows take "Personal Mastery," a course in professional development.  At the end of the course, students complete an internship in a major firm. Career Services data indicate employers value internship experiences more than any other factor when considering students for employment.  Business Fellows have interned with, among others:

  • Bank of America; Charlotte, NC; Marketing Research
  • Cherry, Bekaert, and Holland; Greensboro, NC; Finance
  • Crowe Chizek; Colombus, OH; Accounting
  • EuroSport; Hillsborough, NC; General Business
  • GMAC (General Motors Acceptance Corporation); General Business
  • IBM; Research Triangle Park; Accounting
  • Jefferson Pilot Financial ; Greensboro, NC; Finance
  • KPMG; Richmond, VA; Accounting
  • Laboratory Corporation of America, Inc.; Burlington, NC; Accounting, Finance, and Information Systems
  • Merrill Lynch; New York City; Finance
  • PHH; Baltimore, MD; General Business
  • Veterans Administration; Charlotte, NC; Economics Research
  • Wiley and Sons; New York City; General Business

Senior Year Project
In their senior year, teams of Business Fellows choose either to manage a portfolio for the Elon Endowment or manage projects for local and regional organizations.

  • Managing a part of the Elon University Endowment, the portfolio management team determines the portfolio objectives (asset allocation, industry balance, and investment style), and selects stocks to meet portfolio objectives.  The team has consistently outperformed the S&P 500 Index.
  • The project management team works on a variety of projects, with clients including the Business Fellows program, Elon University, and local and regional businesses. At the end of the semester, students are qualified to sit for the Project Management Institute's Certificate of Associate Project Management (CAPM).

Who Should Apply
High school seniors with at least a 3.4 grade point average who have a strong interest in a career in business, non-profit organizations or government and who plan to major in business administration, economics or accounting.

Selection Criteria
Twenty-five Business Fellows will be admitted annually based on academic criteria, business interest and experience, an essay, and an interview conducted during Elon's annual Fellows weekend.

Scholarships
Admitted students qualify for one of nine scholarships, valued at $3500 annually. This amount is in addition to any Presidential Scholarship already received.

First-year Business Fellows study sustainable business in the Yucatan

What we did and what we saw

On January 13th, 2009 the 23 Elon University Business Fellows from the class of 2012 departed early from Elon, NC on the annual Business Fellows winter term study abroad program. Hosted in Mexico, the students departed from Charlotte International Airport en route to Cancun, Mexico and then to Merida on a 4-hour bus ride across the Yucatan peninsula. The trip was aimed at educating the students on modern business principles, concepts, and functions while expanding the students’ social and cultural horizons.

Senior Business Fellows tackle the "Big Apple"

Every fall, Elon provides the Business Fellows the opportunity to go to New York City for a whirlwind weekend of first hand business education.  In years past the trip has been limited to the senior class, but in this year of transition the juniors and seniors went together, marking the transition of the trip to junior year.  This evolution reinforces the growing importance of internships and will hopefully aid the juniors in finding employment with top notch businesses looking for the best talent possible.
