Incoming New/ Transfer Student Frequently Asked Questions

If you are an incoming first-year or transfer student, you probably have questions about what to pack, room configurations, how to sign up for classes and other information, just to name a few. Later in the summer, when housing assignments post, this site will be updated with responses to some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from students getting ready to come to Elon.

For now, questions we often get about the housing application process include:

How are assignments prioritized?

Housing assignments are based on the date of the student’s enrollment deposit and early decision application. We begin receiving deposits as early as November and December. When assigning housing, we start with the participants in living learning communities and then assign the remaining students in priority order.

When will I know my assignment and my roommate?

Assignments and roommate information will be posted online for students beginning mid July. Emails with this same information will be sent to student's Elon email accounts the week of July 15.

Why can’t I just specify which building I want to live in?

Residential neighborhoods each have their own set of programs and experiences. Buildings within those neighborhoods are often very similar in their configuration, so students are encouraged to consider where they would like to live on the basis of the programs and experiences offered within the neighborhood.

Will I get one of my top choices for residential neighborhood?

Each of the residential neighborhoods offers a unique experience. Depending upon the year and student’s interests, not every student will get one of their top choices of neighborhood, so incoming students are asked to rank all the possible options (four for new first-year students, six for incoming transfer students). It is not unusual for students to live in a neighborhood that wasn’t one of the top choices, but most students report a great experience at Elon, no matter where they live.

Where is all of the information about furniture, room sizes, and building amenities?

Some information about buildings and amenities can be found on this website. Later in the summer, after assignments have been posted, this information will be updated to include the more specific information for that stage of the housing process, as students are preparing to move in to their assigned building.

What size are the beds?

All rooms in residence halls have extra-long twin beds, except single rooms in Global and Colonnades have full sized beds.

When is move-in day and New Student Orientation?

New students will move in on Friday, August 22, 2014. Orientation activities begin that day through Monday, August 25. Classes begin on Tuesday, August 26. Additional information about New Student Orientation is available on the Elon website.

Who can I call with other questions?
