Frequently Asked Questions
If you are an incoming first-year or transfer student, you probably have questions about what to pack, room configurations, how to sign up for classes and other information, just to name a few. Later in the summer, when housing assignments post, this site will be updated with responses to some of the most frequently asked questions we hear from students getting ready to come to Elon.
For now, questions we often get about the housing application process include:
How are assignments prioritized?
When assigning housing, we start with the participants in living learning communities and then assign remaining students using a random process.
Where will I live as an incoming student?
Incoming students are assigned housing in the following order: students with accommodations; Living-Learning Communities (LLCs); athletic groups; single gender housing (Smith, Carolina, and West); remaining students are randomly assigned to first-year eligible neighborhoods, keeping roommate matches in mind (Global, Colonnades, East, and Historic).
Where you live is important, but who you live with and your experiences are even more important! Please review our webpage on all of the exciting programs in the residential neighborhoods.
What is a parental verification email?
If a student is under the age of 18 when they access the housing application, they will not be able to complete the full application until a Parent/Guardian reviews and signs off on the application/contract. Once this is done, the student will receive an email and can re-access the application to complete it.
To complete this Parental Verification, complete the following steps:
- Student will update their Parent/Guardian contact information, including email address, on the housing application.
- After the application is submitted, the listed Parent/Guardian email address will receive an email with a link to the underage application and a code they’ll need to enter.
- Example Email:
Dear NAME,
You have received a request to be a guarantor on an Elon Housing Agreement. Please access the link below to review the agreement and sign on behalf of your Elon student.

Kirsten Carrier
Assistant Dean of Campus Life & Director of Residence Life
Once those steps are completed, the underage applicant will be able to complete the application.
When will I know my assignment and my roommate?
Assignments and roommate information will be posted online for students in the summer, typically on July 10. Emails with this same information will be sent to students’ Elon email accounts.
Where is all of the information about furniture, room sizes, and building amenities?
Specific furniture, room sizes, and amenity information are on neighborhood websites.
Some information about buildings and amenities here. Please check back when you have received your assignment in summer.
What size are the beds?
All rooms in residence halls have extra-long twin beds, except single rooms in Global, East, and Colonnades have full sized beds.
When is move-in day and New Student Orientation?
Students will be given a specific move-in date and time on their Acorn Accounts on July 10. Additional information about New Student Orientation is available on the Elon website.
