Elon University’s national campus in Los Angeles provides Elon students the opportunity to take classes, intern at unique companies and organizations, network with alumni and spend their weekends exploring the Los Angeles area and community on university-planned excursions.
This summer, rising high school seniors interested in learning more about Elon University, academics and the classroom experience are invited to attend a class visit at Elon’s Los Angeles campus. Crisis PR: The Fame Edition
Monday, June 23, 11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Students in this course will use legacy, recent and real-time case studies, along with research and in-class industry guests, to learn how to create a strategic response and launch a targeted campaign to resolve an image crisis and/or PR scandal at a time when fame can be your client’s worst enemy.
History of LA Music
Tuesday, June 24, 1:00 – 4:30 p.m.
The History of Music in LA course serves as an introduction to the styles and history of popular music from its roots in the early 20th century through the current era. The course will also explore the major technological breakthroughs in the recording industry that have allowed popular music to become a driving mass media force, as well as some key milestones in the development on the business side of music including studios, labels, copyright, royalties, and revenue streams. The course includes in-class discussions during which we’ll analyze audio and video recordings, in-class guest speakers from the music industry in Los Angeles, and field trips to important music industry locations in Los Angeles.
Master Class in Directing
Monday, July 14, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Students learn visual language, film grammar, rules of on-screen directing, blocking actors, best practices for directing performance, the role of camera movement and other aspects critical to developing skills as a director. Through the study of aesthetics for single-camera scripted projects for film and television and in-class directing exercises, learn how to move a story from script to screen, block actors, direct the camera, compose cinematic shots and develop an aesthetic plan for narrative directing. By the end of the course students will gain knowledge, industry terminology and learn a bit of the business of directing from the opportunities to be funded as an emerging director and to the pathways for developing careers in Hollywood.
The Business of Content Creation
Monday, July 14, 1:00 – 4:30 p.m.
So you have a creative project in mind. Now what? Learn how to navigate the entertainment business by developing an overview understanding of the various steps in a creative project: pitching your project, assembling the creative team to make that project a reality, financing, representation, production & project management, pitching and deal-making, marketing, financing, and distribution. Other topics will include working with agents & managers, the development process, and creating a budget.
