Preparation for Careers in Journalism
Emmanuel Morgan ’19, a reporter for The New York Times, has always had a knack for storytelling. Investigating important issues that inform, educate and empower the public comes naturally to the Elon graduate.
At Elon, Morgan earned a degree in journalism and displayed a tenacious work ethic, serving as a consistent presence in student media while completing internships with the Charlotte Observer, Atlanta Journal-Constitution and News21. He credits Elon’s journalism faculty for serving as a driving force in his career.
“The mentoring my professors gave me, as well as the real-world experience I received from my internships and extracurriculars, helped prepare me for the rigors and demands of being a professional,” Morgan said. “It’s something I can look back on and say that I was well-trained and confident to contribute to each organization I worked for after Elon.”
Learn modern-day journalism techniques
Journalism serves an essential role in democracy by keeping citizens informed about their world. The news and information gained through reporting, writing, editing and visual journalism reaches the public through print, broadcast, online and mobile channels.
A Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Journalism requires 52 credit hours in Communications, plus the 2-hour GST 115 Public Speaking course. Students must complete a minimum of 72 credit hours outside of Communications, including an academic minor or double major or a semester abroad in an Elon-approved program.
