Frequently Asked Questions about Living-Learning Communities (LLCs)

What is a Living-Learning Community (LLC)?

Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) consist of groups of students residing on the same hall (or building, in some cases) with other students who share the same passion, interest, or academic focus. These communities attend events, programs, service experiences, meals, and even classes together, while receiving mentorship from faculty/staff advisors who also share the same passion, interest, or academic focus.

Are any LLCs for first-years only? Upper-class students only?

Yes and yes. The LLCs in the first-year neighborhoods (East and Historic) are reserved for first-year students only. The LLCs in Colonnades and Global are open to first-year through fourth-year students. Currently, the Eco Village LLC at Loy Farm is the only LLC limited to upper-class students (sophomores through seniors).

Is living in an LLC a one-, two-, or four-year commitment?

Students apply to an LLC each year as part of their housing application. Many students love their LLC experience as a first-year student and decide to apply for the same or a different LLC their second/third/fourth year on campus.

If I have already completed my housing application, can I update it to include LLC preferences?

New incoming students can re-visit/update their housing application until the priority deadline in early May. Current students are not able to re-visit their housing application; however, you can email residencelife@elon.edu to request we clear your application to allow you to make updates to your LLC preference before the priority deadline in early February.

How many LLCs can I apply for?

You rank your top 3 choices of LLC on your housing application.

Am I guaranteed to get into an LLC?

While selection to an LLC is not guaranteed, most students get into one of their top 3 choices. Students who do not get into their top choices are often offered an opportunity to join an LLC with space remaining following the selection process.

How are students chosen for an LLC?

Students are chosen and placed by the LLC Advisors. Decisions are based on the applications and answers to the written questions in the application. We try to place first-years with first-years and upper-class students with upper-class students.

How does Early Decision admission to Elon impact my LLC application?

Admitted Early Decision students are given priority in the review of LLC applications. This is not a guarantee of selection.

Do I have to take any specific classes as part of an LLC?

Many (but not all) of the LLCs have “linked courses” for first-year students residing in the LLC. These are either Core Curriculum courses (like COR 1100, ENG 1100, or STS 1100), Elective courses, or related Minor courses that are either restricted to members of the LLC or primarily filled with members of the LLC. Most (not all) LLCs take their linked course together in the fall semester. First-year students in a fall linked course will be automatically enrolled in the linked course, though certain limitations apply (like being a Fellow/Scholar may mean being in a course linked to that program versus one linked to your LLC).

What is a linked course?

Linked courses are course offerings at Elon that are cohorted by LLC or neighborhood. This means that the students in the linked course will come from the same LLC or residential neighborhood. Most of the linked courses are in the Core Curriculum (e.g., COR 1100, ENG 1100, STS 1100), while others provide elective credit or credit toward a relevant minor. Linked courses help students integrate their in-class and out-of-class experiences and enable students to more easily study together, perform group work, and have a class-based cohort experience in their own neighborhood.

If I'm selected for an LLC, what are the requirements for participation?

Each LLC outlines the expectations for good standing in the community in the LLC syllabus (available on each LLC webpage). Like most things, you’ll get out of the experience what you put into it.

How am I paired with my roommate in the LLC?

If chosen for an LLC, the LLC Advisor will place you with another student in the LLC. You can also request a specific roommate; however, both you and the roommate need to be selected to the same LLC to be placed together. You and your preferred roommate should both complete the housing application with the same LLC preferences so that you are both considered.

How will I find out if I'm accepted to an LLC?

You will receive an email from Residence Life alerting you of your selection to an LLC.
