Leadership Opportunities
Fellows serve as directors of Live Oak Communications, Elon’s student-run public relations agency; leaders at Elon News Network, the university’s daily multimedia news organization (which includes The Pendulum newspaper and “Elon Tonight”); and executives in the student-led Sport Management Society.

Strong Cohort Experience
Build close relationships with peers and faculty through a supportive and collaborative learning community.

Professional Travel Experiences
Take Fellows-only excursions to meet industry professionals in Charlotte, Washington, D.C., Florida and beyond.

Advanced Skill Development
Gain the know-how to conduct research, work in multimedia teams producing content worldwide, and manage sport organizations, events, facilities and promotions.

Who should apply?

Any student who plans to major in journalism, strategic communications, cinema & television arts, media analytics, communication design or sport management should apply. Students should have a GPA of at least 3.8. Competitive candidates will have a diverse range of interests, backgrounds and experiences. Forty-five Fellows are selected each year based on high school academic performance, involvement in communications or sport management-related activities, essays and a faculty interview. Up to 20 program seats are available for students majoring or minoring in sport management. Apply to Elon University Early Decision, Early Action or Regular Deadline by November 1 and to Communication Fellows by Nov. 10.

Program Benefits

Scholarships

Forty-five Communications Fellows will be selected to receive scholarships valued at $8,000 and are renewable annually as long as the student remains a Fellow in good standing. This is in addition to any Presidential Scholarship received.

Capstone Experience

This final project may include original research, investigation of a media or communications topic, or a performance presentation in your area of interest.

Global Study Grant

All 45 Communications Fellows receive a one-time $1,000 Global Study grant to a university-approved study abroad or Study USA experience.

Special Learning Opportunities

Fellows are often invited to work on special projects for the School of Communications, such as a recent documentary project examining coverage of the Civil Rights Movement. Fellows also participate in news conferences and Q&A sessions with the high-profile speakers that Elon brings to campus. Past speakers include CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and journalist and the late political analyst David Gergen, who served as an adviser to four U.S. presidents; and New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, a three-time recipient of the Pulitzer Prize.
