As a Fellow, you will be challenged by enriching experiences and a curriculum that is distinguished by many features:
- Study abroad at the School of Education Center at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Fellows complete two
education courses, one of which includes a five-week, full-time teaching placement in a local school. - Work with a faculty mentor on research investigating a problem or question related to your field of study. Fellows and faculty publish and present shared research.
- Spend two Winter Terms engaged in domestic study experiences that will broaden your perspective and complement
your education studies. - Tutor in local schools, participate in retreats and common readings with your cohort, attend academic seminars and take field trips to innovative schools.
Who should apply?
Students who are committed to educating future generations and have distinguished themselves as leaders are encouraged to
apply. Students should have a 3.8 GPA or higher. Thirty Teaching Fellows are selected each year based on academic criteria, essays and a faculty interview. The application deadline is January 15.
Note: Music education majors must also complete a department audition in conjunction with their admission to Elon.
Program Benefits
Scholarships
Thirty Teaching Fellows will receive scholarships valued at $7,500, which are renewable annually as long as the student remains a Fellow in good standing. This is in addition to any Presidential or Elon Engagement scholarship received.
Semester in New Zealand
Sophomore Teaching Fellows study abroad at the School of Education Center at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Fellows complete two education courses, one of which includes a five-week, full-time teaching placement in a local school. Elon provides airfare support and Fellows pay associated study abroad fees.
World language majors will study for a semester in a country appropriate to their language study.
Inquiry with Faculty Mentor
Junior Fellows work with a faculty mentor on research investigating a problem or question related to their field of study. Fellows and faculty present and publish shared research.
Enrichment Experiences
Seminars on important issues in education, campus cultural events, volunteer tutoring and field trips to innovative area schools supplement Teaching Fellows’ professional development.
