Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Student Blue Plan
The Student Blue Plan, offered to Elon students through Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, is designed to meet the needs of students who have no insurance or who have inadequate insurance coverage for emergencies in the Guilford/Alamance County area. The plan is also a great option for students and families who want to provide additional medical coverage for the student while they are enrolled at Elon.
The Student Blue Plan is designed to:
- Provide more affordable coverage for full-time students not covered or eligible to be covered by a parent/partner or employer policy. Many policies available in the insurance marketplace may be much more costly and offer fewer benefits.
- Offer a plan that covers students when they study away from their home state or network (i.e., Study USA, required internships, alternative breaks).
- Provide more cost-effective options for students who have a high deductible plan or HMO in another state. Some students and families will decide to enroll in the student plan as primary coverage or as a secondary policy.
- Offer a more responsive and stable plan for international students.
International students holding an F1 or J1 visa, enrollment in the Student Blue plan is mandatory.

Voluntary Coverage for Students Who May Already Have Insurance Coverage
Students and families will want to consult with their insurance adviser and compare coverage. While the current coverage may be acceptable for a waiver, your current coverage may not provide the kind of security and coverage provided by the student plan, which is tailored to an Elon student’s specific needs. Some students and families may choose to enroll in the Student Blue Plan as primary, secondary or supplemental coverage. All full-time graduate and undergraduate students may enroll in the Student Blue Plan.
