The Student Life Emergency Response System

The Division of Student Life provides a comprehensive emergency response system to support students in crisis, available 24/7 through coordinated on-call staff and support services. The system includes a Student Life Administrator on-call, a Crisis Counselor on-call, a Senior Student Life Administrator on-call, and Safeline – a confidential advocate for individuals who have experienced sexual assault, relationship abuse, stalking, or sexual harassment.

Students or family members experiencing a personal crisis situation that requires an immediate administrative response or support should contact the Student Life Emergency Response System by calling Campus Safety and Police at (336) 278-5555.

All emergencies (medical, psychological, police) should be directed to 9-1-1 FIRST. Once emergency assistance has been dispatched, Campus Safety Dispatchers will notify the Student Life Emergency On-Call Response System for follow-up.

When to Contact the Student Life Emergency System

The Student Life Emergency Response System offers after-hours and weekend support for students and families in crisis. Campus Safety will dispatch the appropriate staff member, who will respond within 30 minutes. After immediate needs are addressed, follow-up may be referred to the appropriate office the next business day. Situations that may involve emergency response include:

  • Medical or psychological emergency follow-up
  • Emergency contact/parent notification
  • Death of a family member or close contact
  • Missing student reports
  • Serious facility concerns or security threats
  • Initial response to acts of bias or campus safety concerns
  • Student arrest or hospital transport

For medical or psychological emergencies, crises, or wellness checks, Elon University Police (for students in on-campus housing) or Town of Elon responders (for off-campus students) will be dispatched first to assess and stabilize the situation. Family members or emergency contacts may be notified as needed.

Situations that require 24/7 support, response, or confidential advocacy for issues of sexual violence, interpersonal violence, stalking, bias, harassment, and hate should be directed to SAFELINE at (336) 278-3333.

After Hours Mental Health/Psychological Crises and Emergencies

In the event of a medical or psychological emergency, call 9-1-1 immediately. Emergency responders—either Elon University Police (for on-campus students) or Town of Elon staff (for off-campus students)—will be dispatched to assess and stabilize the situation. The Student Life Emergency Response Team will be contacted for follow-up, and family members or emergency contacts may be notified as needed.

24/7 Virtual Care with TimelyCare

When Student Health Services is closed, TimelyCare offers free, 24/7 access to medical and mental health support from licensed providers—available from anywhere in the U.S. Providers can address a range of common concerns and, if appropriate, issue prescriptions for local pickup.

Mental Health Crises and Support

For non-life-threatening psychological crises, students can reach the Counselor On-call anytime at (336) 278-2222. The counselor will assess the situation and recommend appropriate steps, which may include a wellness check, hospital referral, or follow-up with university staff. Ongoing support may be coordinated with Counseling Services during regular hours.

SAFELINE

SAFELINE is Elon’s confidential support hotline for members of the Elon community who may be experiencing sexual assault, relationship abuse, stalking, or sexual harassment. To contact the hotline, call (336) 278-3333.

SAFELINE does not provide immediate emergency dispatch or mental health crisis response. For urgent safety needs, call 9-1-1 and Campus Safety and Police. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis should contact the Counselor On-call by calling (336) 278-2222.

Staying Informed in Emergencies

Rave Guardian Icon

To ensure timely communication in emergencies, students are expected to keep their phone number, emergency contact, and (if living off campus) physical address up-to-date with the Registrar. Changes can be submitted through the online form on the Office of the Registrar’s website.

Students are also encouraged to download the Rave Guardian app, which provides two-way communication with Campus Safety and Police, anonymous reporting options, and real-time safety alerts, and the Safety Timer, which allows users to share their location with a trusted contact to “virtually escort” them by monitoring their location on a map.
